How Electroacupuncture Can Help Shoulder ‘Stingers’

How Electroacupuncture Can Help Shoulder ‘Stingers’

In contact and collision sports such as football, peripheral nerve injuries are quite common. One American football study showed that the lifetime rate of brachial plexus injuries was 50.3%. This nerve can be found in the neck, with many branches going down to the ribcage, the armpit, and down to the upper arm to the hand. The result of this injury can lead to what’s called the cervical “burner” or “stinger” syndrome, which can be identified through unilateral weakness, generally paired with a burning sensation that follows down an upper extremity all the way down to the fingertips. Although the condition may last only two weeks, it can also become a chronic syndrome.

Injury to this region can affect both sensation and movement of different parts of your arm. These injuries can be caused by the shoulder being pushed down and the head being pulled up, which causes stretching and tearing of the nerves.

How Electroacupuncture Can Help

In one research study, electroacupuncture was used in one group following a brachial plexus injury, while a second group did not undergo treatment. The results were quite promising. The findings were that the group given electroacupuncture treatment had an increased number of endorphins in the arcuate nucleus compared to those who did not receive treatment. This kind of endorphin is a peptide that is comprised of 31 amino acid residues and is found in vertebrate neurons. When we experience pain, this endorphin is released to reduce the pain that we feel. The group that received electroacupuncture therapy showed a much higher number of endorphin positive cells compared to the group who did not receive treatment.

Because this endorphin was found in such a greater quantity in the group that received electroacupuncture compared to the control group, it shows that a greater analgesic effect was achieved. This was also consistent with the behavioral observation that should how the thresholds for mechanically induced pain were higher, and instances of autonomy were less in the electroacupuncture group than in the control group. This further shows how electroacupuncture is an effective treatment option following a brachial plexus injury.

The conclusion of this study shows that electroacupuncture can be effective in relieving neuropathic pain after brachial plexus injuries, especially after total brachial plexus avulsion. Because electroacupuncture is both safe and inexpensive, it is a very good option after one undergoes an injury that harms their brachial plexus.

How Acupuncture Can Relieve Your Shin Splints

Shin Splints (also known as tibial stress syndrome) are one of the top ten most common sports related injuries. Runners, joggers, and anyone who plays a sport with a lot of running involved are at risk from this injury. The pain you feel from shin splints happens due to the shinbone (or tibia) and the attached connective tissues to become overloaded suddenly. This is generally when athletes train for too long or too hard, or if the athlete increases the duration or amount of exercise all at once. Running downhill or on hard surfaces, as well as having flat feet makes one especially prone to shin splints.

Along with the pain from shin splints, you may also experience swelling and hardening of the soft tissues in the area. Although rest is recommended, the damage has already been done due to the muscle tissue surrounding the shin bone becomes traumatized, causing micro-fractures of the bone to develop. Even if you rest completely, it can take up to six to eight weeks for the injury to heal, but will be prone to reaggravate it again.

How Acupuncture Can Heal Your Shin Splints

Acupuncture is an excellent treatment option for shin splints, especially since Western medicine has very little to offer treatment-wise besides rest, ice, and pain killers. Acupuncture is found to be the most effective if started when the symptoms first begin.

By releasing several your body’s natural healing cells and substances such as endorphins, neuropeptides, serotonin, and neurotransmitters, acupuncture helps to promote healing of the area, alleviate pain, increase microcirculation, as well as attract white blood cells to the area of focus. This helps to speed up the healing rate, decrease swelling, and help to disperse bruising of the area.

Research to Back Up This Claim

An article by Matt Callison, printed in the Journal of Chinese Medicine in October 2000, shows a study conducted on shin splints and the efficacy of acupuncture to help heal the injury. The study concluded that acupuncture shows to be effective in helping to relieve pain associated with shin splints. The group that received both acupuncture and combined acupuncture and anti-inflammatory medicated groups. The use of medication decreased over the duration of the study, as well as their perception of pain. The participants reported being less hindered due to pain both during sporting and non-sporting activities and felt greater pain relief.

Acupuncture is the great treatment option for shin splints. It is safe because no chemical substances are injected into the body’s systems and often painless because the needles used are much thinner than the ones used in injections. Fast Relief Acupuncture has a developed a unique treatment system where shin splints can be treated with long lasting effects! With a specialized combination of modern treatment modalities and precise diagnostic techniques, Fast Relief Acupuncture can make your ‘trigger points/ knots’ be a problem of your past! Sciatica Pain Relief with Fast Relief Acupuncture

One the most common sport injuries for athletes is Sciatica. This disorder is an irritation of the largest nerve in the body known as the Sciatic nerve. The cause of the nerve irritation can be from a bulging or protruding disc pressing onto the nerve or tight muscles, especially around the gluteus/ butt region, squeezing onto the same nerve. Other than pain on the areas of the lower back and hips, sometimes symptoms of shooting pain, numbness and tingling, and/ or sensation of ‘pins and needles’ on the legs and feet are typically associated with Sciatica. Those that are most susceptible to Sciatica are athletes who are in a flexed forwards posture (such as cyclists), or in athletes that use a large amount of trunk rotation in various swing sports such as tennis and golf.

How Acupuncture Can Help Ease Your Sciatica Pain

The insertion of acupuncture triggers a response from your nervous system causing several things to happen. It releases a cascade of your body’s natural painkillers such as endorphins and enkephalins, increasing fresh blood flow and relaxing the muscles in the injured areas. These injures areas can be the muscles along the lumbar spine, the gluteus muscles, the hamstrings, and even the piriformis muscles (located deep within the gluteus muscles).

Blood circulation to the areas of injury is of utmost importance when it comes to healing injuries. If blood flow is restricted or obstructed for whatever reason, the area will be negatively impacted, and become much more difficult to heal. This is especially common in more chronic health conditions or injuries in which dysfunctions accumulate over time.

Why Blood Flow Is So Important for Healing

Having proper blood flow is important because it contains many of the healing components needed to repair the body.  It contains analgesics (your body’s naturally produced pain killers), nutrients, oxygen, immune cells, hormones, and more. Acupuncture allows that the body to receive the proper amount of fresh blood to the injured area, allowing your body to heal itself much more quickly and efficiently.

When you are injured, your body goes through two main stages to heal itself. The initial stage is mostly about protecting the area that you’ve injured. This happens when your nerves send pain signals to your brain, alerting you there is an issue in an area. Next, the brain creates a ‘guarding’ reflex in the surrounding muscles, making it more difficult to move (such as soreness or a limited range of motion) to make sure that you don’t injure yourself further. Lastly, the brain restricts flow of blood to the area in case it is due to an infection or a poison (from something like a snake bite).

Once this stage is complete, inflammation will be reduced in the area and your brain begins the second stage of healing. This is when acupuncture really helps you out in helping your body heal as quickly as possible. As stated earlier, the brain will release chemicals to help alleviate the pain, relaxes your ‘guarding reflex’ to allow increased range of motion in your muscles, and dilates your blood vessels to bring back blood flow to the area in need of healing.

Fast Relief Acupuncture has a developed a unique treatment and effective system to treat Sciatica quickly with long lasting effects! Fast Relief Acupuncture specifically targets the root cause of the problem, rather than the symptoms. With a specialized combination of modern treatment modalities and diagnostic precision, Fast Relief Acupuncture can make your Sciatica be a problem of your past! How Electroacupuncture Inhibits Pain: On A Chemical Level

The study “Mechanism of Acupuncture-Electroacupuncture on Persistent Pain” published in February 2015 shows that electroacupuncture activates the nervous system in a different way when in healthy conditions than in pain conditions. Electroacupuncture blocks pain by being able to activate several different bioactive chemicals though spinal, peripheral, and supraspinal mechanisms. These chemicals include opioids, which are responsible for desensitizing the peripheral nociceptors and for reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines both peripherally and in the spinal cord. Additional research also suggests that electroacupuncture combined with a low dose of conventional analgesics can provide just as effective, if not more so, than quite often-debilitating pharmaceuticals.

Because pain is such a major health problem causing not only social and economic consequences but puts athletes out of commission for generally long bouts of time. Conventional over-the-counter pain medication only works so well, and is not meant for long-term use, so another method of pain relief is needed to help those who are suffering. According to studies, around two million people in the United States turned to acupuncture, with pain relief being the number one cause in 2002 and increased to three million by 2007. Coinciding with these numbers, research has also continued to increase over time, not just on acupuncture, but on the benefits of electroacupuncture for pain relief.

In summary of this study, the research has shown how electroacupuncture significantly helped to alleviate various pains, whether it be inflammatory, neuropathic, cancer, or visceral pain in the corresponding animal models.

Electroacupuncture treatment has shown to activate the nervous system in a different way when one is healthy compared to when one is in pain. This is shown in two different studies. The first prove that the opioid receptors are involved differently in the electroacupuncture inhibition of pain in healthy animals versus those with persistent pain. This is also shown in patients with Bell’s Palsy compared to the responses shown by those of healthy volunteers.

Electroacupuncture treatment on inflammatory pain has been extensively studied and researched, showing that it blocks not just the sensory components of pain, but also the effective components by acting though spinal, supraspinal, and peripheral mechanisms. This is combined with the involvement of bio active molecules ranging from serotonin, norepinephrine, opioids, cytokines, and glutamate receptors and transporters.

Of all of those listed above, opioids play the most central role in how electroacupuncture can inhibit all kinds of pain. Because opioids can desensitize peripheral nociceptors and lower the levels of cytokines in peripheral sites, it helps to inhibit pain. Opioids also can activate the descending inhibitory system, or the main neurotransmitters, serotonin and norepinephrine, which helps to inhibit pain.

So, what does all this mean? This shows that on a chemical level, electroacupuncture is shown to alleviate and inhibit all types of pain, using the body’s own chemicals and biochemical reactions, reducing the need to turn to over-the-counter medication once more to feel relief from whatever injury or pain related issue you may be suffering from on a chronic basis. The more that electroacupuncture is studied, the more is found that there is another option out there for you besides simply continually taking pills that only temporarily fix the problem.

Electroacupuncture Promotes Tissue Repair in Sports Athletes

A study conducted by Indiana University School of Medicine published in the journal Stem Cells in March 2017 found that the utilization of electroacupuncture releases stem cells, which in turn helps tissue repair. This can be especially helpful for athletes who need to heal from various injuries as quickly as possible so they can get back on the court or field to start playing once more.

This study shows that electroacupuncture triggers a neurological mechanism that can both help promote tissue repair as well as help to reduce injury-related pain. These findings show great insight of how electroacupuncture stimulates your brain, causing the release of stem cells, as well as adding additional information regarding the cells’ healing properties.

    Details on This Study:

With a team comprised of over forty scientists at institutions in both the USA and in South Korea was led by several senior researchers including Maria B. Grant, Marilyn Glick, Mervin C. Yoder, Richard Klinger, Pauline Klinger, Fletcher A. White, and Vergil K. Stoelting. All these authors are distinguished professors and directors in their fields, helping to guide and focus the study to produce these invaluable findings that we can use today.

The researchers in this study conducted a series of lab tests that involved humans, horses and rodents to follow the effects of electroacupuncture from the stimulus of the needle itself to the brain, where it resulted in the release of MSCs (or reparative mesenchymal stem cells) into the bloodstream of the patient being studied.

Contingent upon the species the researchers were testing on, electroacupuncture led to the activation of the hypothalamus, a part of your brain that is responsible for controlling the nervous system and your involuntary bodily functions (including your heart rate and digestion).  This happened within nine to twenty-two minutes, and the stem cells were mobilized within two hours.

Dr. White, a neuroscientist at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center located in Indianapolis stated that, “the acupuncture stimulus we’re giving these animals has a rapid effect on the neuroanatomical pathways that connect the stimulus point in the arm to responsive neurons in the spinal cord and into a region in the brain called the hypothalamus. In turn, the hypothalamus directs outgoing signals to stem cell niches resulting in their release.”

The researchers also found that these electroacupuncture treatments resulted in higher thresholds for both injury related pain and for much higher increases in a type of collagen that is known to promote tendon repair, along with anti-inflammatory cells, which are also known for predicting faster healing times for injuries.

Due to these findings, Dr. White expressed how these new findings may lead to new and improved strategies for pain management and tissue repair related to injuries. He stated that if they can capture the MSCs from the individual’s blood after electroacupuncture to save for future re-introduction into the patient after a surgery it could possible help to treat chronic pain.

    Trigger Points and Pain:

It is not uncommon to hear someone complain about having pain on their body specifically their muscles. It is also very common to hear many health practitioners of different scopes to say that the cause of these muscle pains is due to ‘trigger points’ or ‘knots’. But what are these ‘trigger points/knots’ exactly and how did they develop within the body? Can acupuncture effectively release or eliminate these ‘trigger points/ knots’?

In order to understand how ‘trigger points’ are formed; we will first look in simple way of how muscles communicate with each other. In a healthy muscle, the fibers and its nerve cell, communicate with each other in a clear fluid similar to water. This fluid is crystal clear in which the correspondences with other nerves are not hindered. The muscle fibers are also loose and relaxed, free to move without any restrictions.

When the human brain detects pain from an injury whether from overuse or trauma, the communication within the muscle system changes. The first change that occurs is the clear fluid described above responsible for communication, now changes to a sticky, glue- like protein-based substance. Due to its adhesive nature, the muscle fibers along with its fascia (muscle covering) rather than being free and loose, are now being pulled together causing adhesions from further injury. One way to do this is for the muscles to be contracted. Considering that the muscle is an external part of the body along with the skin, the contraction or tightening of the muscle can be seen to protect and prevent further damage/ injuries to both the bones and the internal organs.

One thing to note is that ‘trigger points’ can often refer pain to a different region of the body. This is due to the fascial planes found on the body. As it was covered in another article, fascial coverings of muscles are usually inter- connected with other muscle of the body. When one part of the fascia is affected or ‘pulled’, a corresponding but at a different region of the body can be affected. For example, if a ‘trigger point/ knot’ is found of the calf of the lower leg, there can be referred pain that goes down to the heel of the foot or a ‘trigger point/ knot’ found on the upper shoulder can refer pain to the back of the neck.

Acupuncture is the best way to release and get rid of ‘trigger points/ knots. It is safe because no chemical substances are injected into the body’s systems and often painless because the needles used in acupuncture are much thinner than the ones used in injections. Fast Relief Acupuncture has a developed a unique treatment system where these ‘trigger points/ knots’ can be released with long lasting effects! Rather than just treating the problem itself, the whole muscle along with the other surrounding muscles are treated with long lasting relief. With a specialized combination of modern treatment modalities, Fast Relief Acupuncture can make your ‘trigger points/ knots’ be a problem of your past! Call today to get the relief you deserve!

Sports Acupuncture Benefits Vs. Traditional Acupuncture

If you’re an athlete who trains (whether it be running, weight lifting, tennis, golfing or just casual weekend activities) on even a semi-regular basis, then looking to find an acupuncturist who specializes in Sports Acupuncture may be the right move for you. Why, you may ask?
The focus of a sports acupuncturist is the body’s movement patterns, releasing muscles that are otherwise tough to get to, as well as other training related areas. Traditional acupuncture does focus on relaxing tight muscles, but not to the extent that a Sports Acupuncturist will go, as that is their primary focus in their treatment session.

How Sports Acupuncture ‘Pin-Points’ the Issues

Instead of simply looking around for tight muscles to release them the way that a traditional acupuncturist may, sports acupuncturists will look not only to release the tight muscles but also how to improve both their functionality and flexibility.

The knowledge and ability to understand movement patterns in the body is crucial. It’s not enough to realize that muscles are tight in an area- the sports acupuncturist must understand WHY this group of muscles is tight. Their goal is to find muscle balance within the human body, so since every muscle has its own reciprocating muscle, the sports acupuncturist needs to know how to achieve this balance.

When a sports acupuncturist is treating a muscular disorder, he or she realizes that is not the only muscle that is involved- it could also involve the reciprocating muscle, or perhaps one further down the kinetic chain. For instance, a tight calf is almost never just a tight calf. The sports acupuncturist will know that they may need to then look at and treat the patient’s hip or thigh as an example, finding the area(s) that are creating the imbalance within the body.

When accounting for the entire fascial, postural, and movement chains of the body into a singular style of acupuncture, it is specifically tailored to help the athlete move, recover, train, and gain full range of motion within their body to achieve fantastic results.

Another good example is if the sports acupuncturist were to treat a patient’s tight trapezius’ (your shoulder) without factoring in any of the surrounding muscles. By only focusing on a singular muscle such as the trapezius, other muscles such as the mid- back and neck are neglected and could be easily be overlooked as the cause of the problem. Treating only one muscle rather than a collective group of muscles that contribute to the function of the movement, would be a very temporary, ‘band- aid’ fix.

The act of releasing tight muscles and their reciprocating imbalanced muscles allows the human body to recover so that it can continue to build muscle without injury. By having less or no restrictions to the function of the muscle, it can not only increase its overall performance but can increase its strength and flexibility. When you combine releasing your muscles with your strength training routine, you can achieve the best results and help to reach the goals you want to achieve.

    Hi,

    My Name is John Kim

I have been a licensed acupuncturist since 2000. When I first started my acupuncture career, my primary goal as a practitioner was to help people anguishing from living with pain everyday of their lives. I have seen on numerous occasions what chronic pain can do to a person physically but also seen how it can debilitate a person’s psyche as well.

Throughout the years, I have studied, developed and incorporated a very unique treatment protocol that has successfully treated and effectively reduced pain levels on chronic pain patients. I have combined traditional methods of acupuncture along with modern, research proven techniques to help reduce chronic pain symptoms in a safe, non- chemically addictive, and effective process.

How Acupuncture can Increase Flexibility and Body Movements

One of the most common questions I get asked is how acupuncture can help treat musculo-skeletal disorders. While there are many thoughts and theories about how acupuncture can improve the human body’s functions i.e. Qi/energy, release of neurotransmitters from the brain, improved blood/ lymph circulations to eliminate toxins, etc… I am going to try and explain it simply as it pertains to the musculo-skeletal system and how it can improve the body’s overall movements. This is the explanation I use on my patients and people I come across because it is very simple to understand and very simple to explain it to others.

First, let’s take a quick anatomy lesson and learn about something called the fascia. It is a band or sheet of connective tissue (mostly collagen) below the skin which attaches, stabilizes, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs. There are three types of fascia layers: superficial, deep, and visceral or parietal fascia. For our purposes, we will only be discussing the superficial and deep ones.

Fascia is made up of fibrous tissues which are closely packed bundles of collagen fibers. They are set in a pattern aligned to a specific direction of pull i.e. muscle contractions and movements. These fibrous tissues are very flexible and can typically resist great single directional pulls. As stated above, the two types of fascia that applies to the musculo-skeletal system are the superficial which pertains to the lower portion of skin layer and the deep which goes through and covers the muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels of the body.

The fascia basically acts as a covering that surrounds the muscles. If the fascia is loose and flexible, the muscles where both blood vessels and nerves travel through, are also loose and free to communicate. When the fascia becomes tight, the muscles also become tight causing restricted blood flow and impingement of the nerves.

A simple analogy to understand how the fascia works is to look at a raw sausage. Sausage is nothing more than ground meat (muscle) inside a casing (fascia). If the casing is too tight, the ground meat inside will soon develop into the oblong shape of a sausage that we’ve all become familiar with. If the casing is cut or very loose, the meat inside is very loose as well, almost having no physical shape or form. When the muscle fascia is tight and stiff on a person, some common physical ailments and complaints include tightness and stiffness of the muscles, nerve impingement, numbness or shooting pains down extremities, restricted movements of body parts, malpositioned or poor positioning of the body, and many more. Once the fascia is released, the muscles become loose and flexible which equates to increased movements and flexibility. This can lead to improved blood and nervous circulation to keep the body healthy and active.

There are several methods and treatments that can loosen the fascia such as manual therapy, corrective exercises, and even stretching. However, these treatments can take a long time to see positive effects or may not be the best method at all. The reason for this is that they are not actually piercing into the skin and the fascia. A sharp object is needed to pierce into the skin and fascia to loosen the muscles quickly and effectively. If we are to use our sausage example, we can try to pull, grab, squeeze, and push the sausage in all different directions and force but it will take a long time to break that casing. Now compare that by using a sharp object such as using a knife or a fork, the casing will break more easily when these equipments are used.

The reason why acupuncture is so effective in treating musculo-skeletal disorders is that the needles can penetrate into both the skin and fascia to loosen it up very quickly. Once this is achieved, the muscles become looser and more flexible causing increased mobility and range of motion. If we look at it in terms of sports performance, this can increase an athlete’s speed, prevent injuries, improve endurance, and increase strength. If we were to look at in everyday life, acupuncture can help a person develop a better posture, better physical balance to prevent falls, improved movements from physical injuries, and prevent future re-occurring injuries.

With high interest and participation of sports activities such as weight lifting, cross training, competitive sports, martial arts, running, etc... in recent years, Sports Medicine has taken a foothold due to people experiencing more injuries due to their respective sports. These concerns are usually related to musculoskeletal conditions, encompassing both acute and chronic injuries. Why Choose Sports Acupuncture?

Sports Acupuncture is used to manage pain symptoms by accelerating the healing process through increased lymph circulation, blood circulation, and improve sports performance by releasing tight muscle fascia (muscle coverings) to bolster flexibility of the joints.

Acupuncture reduces pain, increases range of motion, improves the body’s recovery time, and strengthens weakened parts of the body. It has also been proven to be very effective in treating sports injuries by decreasing inflammation, reducing swelling, relaxing muscles, relieving spasms, and lowering the body’s response to pain. It also functions to improve overall blood and lymph circulation, increase the delivery of nutrients and removing noxious elements out of the body.

Currently many professional sports teams have incorporated acupuncture treatments for their players to improve their recovery times and help resolve chronic ailments. It is well documented that superstars of the NFL, MLB, NBA, UFC, and NHL utilize acupuncture treatments as part of their training regime to both improve their performance to extend the longevity of their career also to reduce recurrence of chronic injuries.
