Gamer’s Thumb: What it is and How to Treat it

gamers thumb

Gaming is an art that requires attention to detail, swift, skilled movements, and dedication. Beyond the basic skills needed, gaming also often demands unnatural, repetitive stimulation of the muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the hand. As gaming skills need to be polished over time, the same goes for the strengthening of these body parts most often used for video gaming.

What is Gamer’s Thumb?

Gamer’s thumb, also scientifically known as De Quervain’s Syndrome, is caused when the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the hand are subjected to repetitive motions most often associated with gaming or texting.

The overuse of thumb related body parts, including tissue, can trigger severe inflammation, causing pain, snapping noises and even immobilization.

The Anatomy of the Thumb

The below picture represents exact locations of where gamers can experience mild to severe symptoms of Gamer’s Thumb.

The major tendon effected runs along the outside of the hand and toward the thumb. There is a membrane attached to the tendon that works as a cushion, separating the tendon and the bone so that all moving parts slide smoothly and painlessly.

When the tendon becomes overworked due to repetitive actions, the tissue membrane becomes inflamed. Inflammation in the membrane will disrupt the thumb, hand, and wrist’s normal functions, causing pain, swelling and the inability to move.

How can Gamer’s Thumb be treated?

The most popular method of treatment is pharmaceutical medications. As medicine has advanced throughout the years, so has the ability to treat injuries, such as Gamer’s Thumb, with anti-inflammatory chemical medications or even with surgery. Although symptom relief can be temporarily achieved via this route, unwanted and even serious side-effects can develop through long-term consumption. Medical researchers warn of stomach, kidney and liver issues potentially developing if medications are over-used.

On the other hand, surgery (although often used as a last resort) can also cause unwanted side-effects such as the inability to perform tasks that were previously completed, even gaming.

Fast Relief Acupuncture has worked hard to master a new revelation for long-term, natural treatment and prevention of Gamer’s Thumb – Acupuncture.

The New Age of “Texting Thumb” and How Acupuncture Can Help

Americans have quickly turned to texting and other social media interactions as the most popular mode of communication. Although communicating has seemed to become much more convenient with the ability to virtually talk anywhere, these types of interactions can come with a painful price.

Texting Tendinitis, also known as “Texting Thumb”, is a condition that can develop over time as a result of the overuse of the joins, ligaments, muscles and tendons within the hand, wrist and forearm (see picture below).

The most common cause of “Texting Thumb” is, you guessed it, texting! The monotonous movements we use to type and scroll on a phone can cause pain, loss of function and tenderness to the components of the thumb joint, wrist and even the forearm. Take for example normal wear and tear on a vehicle. When using the same parts consistently for long periods of time, something is bound to need replacing or tuned up eventually. The same goes with injuries such as “Texting Thumb”. While texting, the thumb is repeatedly participating in movements involving extension, flexion, abduction-adduction and opposition. The thumb was not made to complete long-term dexterous work such as constantly pressing buttons on a phone. Resulting from this, phone users can experience mild to severe cases of “Texting Thumb” or even chronic, more severe injuries.

Severe cases of “Texting Thumb” can cause the Median Nerve, located in the wrist, to become impinged. This can cause an array of symptoms to include, numbness, tingling, and weakness within the hand and fingers. The result of such symptoms is defined as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is extremely painful and involves the breaking down of function within the digits and the hand. Often, due to weakness, inability to grip, and severe pain, patients who present with Carpal Tunnel require surgery.

How can “Texting Thumb” be prevented?

Once in the virtual world, it is nearly impossible to take a break or remove yourself altogether. To prevent injuries from occurring, without putting down your phone for good, preventative measures must be taken. If you are a frequent text-er or social media extraordinaire preventative acupuncture may be right for you. Fast Relief Acupuncture provides treatments that work to keep your joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons in tip-top shape, strengthening over time. Rather than diminishing vital areas of the hand which invites in injury, our experienced specialists prevent the breakdown from occurring in the first place. This process ultimately enables a healthy environment for all your virtually related business needs.
